Valentine Dance 420 Wing RCAFA
Air cadets is fortunately not all drill, classes and book work but it is also has special activities where cadets can get out and have fun with their friends.
One of these special activities happened on Friday evening at the Squadron’s annual Valentine Dance. As one can see the cadets selected a King and Queen
and of course there was lots of pizza for all in attendance.
Cadet Achievement Points
The achievement program, which may be new to some of our new cadets, was first used to make sure that selection processes for certain things in the Squadron were done fairly and transparently. It has grown from there and now allows cadets to gauge their level of participation against that of their peers.
Cadets need to remember that their participation in the cadet program is being tracked and when the staff is selecting cadets for special activities
such as year-end trips, trophies, summer camps, awards and promotions one of the first things that is reviewed is a cadets achievement record, although there are many other things taken into account and other prerequisites need to be met for many awards and promotions.
So that we make sure that all cadets are aware of the program and their personal standing we have included a list of the top 25 cadets.
Cadets and their leaders should be reviewing this list on a regular basis to ensure that they have been credited with all of the earned points. Check out www.Chadburn.org and looking under the heading of Resources.
Remember that one of the keys to a successful and fun time in the cadet program is to get out and participate.

Thoughts from the Elliptical
Snow, snow and more snow. Although we have been extremely lucky so far this winter with the weather and the fact that we haven’t had to cancel any cadet activities due to snow, I should remind everyone that in case of inclement weather and a potential cancellation, we will do our absolute best to get the word out as early as possible that we are cancelling. We hopefully will have time to get phone calling done, but at the very least we will update the Squadron’s answering machine and the Web page. We will also try to get it put up on our FaceBook page.
I had the opportunity to go to the Marksmanship Club of Oshawa earlier today. I haven’t been up there since we stopped having the parent and cadet shoot there about a dozen or so years ago. Driving in through the snow covered road brought back many memories of the times that I was there as a cadet with my father and also the many years spent out there as an officer helping to run the competition. Nothing has really changed that much out at the club, they have stopped using the fireplace (which was always a nice part of the day) and a fresh coat of paint has been put on everything, but anybody that spent a day out there with the Squadron would certainly recognize it. Chatting with the president of the club, I brought up the fact that the Squadron used to use their facility regularly and he mentioned that he remembered those days and that they always knew when we had been in because the club was always nice and clean when we finished. Unfortunately with changing regulations regarding cadets shooting firearms indoors, those days at the MCO are behind us. More great memories from the 75 years of the Squadron’s history.
I want to remind everyone that the money for the ski trip is due this week. We have a full bus for the ski trip and will not be accepting any more names. I hope everyone has a great day skiing, Remember that although we are out there to have fun, this is still a cadet activity and you are still representing the Squadron.
Just a reminder that next week is Family Day and we won’t be using the school. We will however be going roller skating at Coach Lite Roller Gardens in downtown Oshawa. Details will come out at closing parade on Monday.
Speaking of closing parade, I’d just like to remind people that when we play the Royal Anthem (God Save the Queen) at our closing parade, as a sign of respect to the Queen we ask that everyone in the gym stand and remove their headdress if they aren’t in uniform.
I hope you all get to spend a special day with your Valentine this week (That is for the parents and alumni, you cadets don’t get to do that).
That’s all for now.
Stay Safe and Have a Great Week

Our 75th Anniversary Photo
CAP Drill Competition – Youngstown Ohio
1960’s
The following photo has been on display in our cadet hall for many years and few squadron members if any have any understanding
of the photos significance in our squadron’s history. The photo was taken at a Civil Air Patrol Drill competition at
Youngstown Ohio in the early 1960’s. The squadron was invited to put on a drill demonstration but the big question was how do we get there.
To solve this problem we asked the RCAF at Trenton if they might wish to fly our cadets to Ohio to participate in the competition.
To our complete surprize they agreed and the rest is history. The picture that follows was taken in Youngstown and shows the cadets
who participated in the demonstration and the DC – 3 that flew us to the competition.
There are some emotional and special moments in our squadron’s history that stand out in one’s memory.
One of those moments occurred on a tour to the United States Military Academy at West Point when
the organist at the West Point Chapple took the opportunity to play a short concert for us.
Readers should know that this Chapple hosts the largest chapel pipe organ in the world
and it consists of some 23,511 individual pipes. The sound of this magnificent organ
became one of those emotional experiences one could never forget.
The second emotional moment occurred on our departure from Youngstown Ohio. As our aircraft taxied behind a long row of USAF
Flying Boxcar cargo aircraft we spotted a flight of CAP cadets all standing at attention behind their aircraft and saluting our aircraft
as we passed by. Another emotional moment one cannot forget. LCOL(Retired) R.E. Gilbank, CD
