FAQ

 Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of commitment is expected?

Cadets are encouraged to attend our weekly Monday night training (parade). In addition, we offer a wide range of optional activities throughout the week – some open to everyone, and others that may require tryouts to join a team.

Throughout the year, cadets also take part in community parades, service projects, and fundraising activities, which help support and sustain our program. Regular participation allows cadets to get the most out of their experience.

How much does membership in the Air Cadets cost?

The Cadet Program is free of charge for participants, with uniforms and training provided at no cost the cadets. The program is funded by the Department of National Defence (DND) and the Air Cadet League of Canada, with local fundraising efforts by our support committee (The Rotary Club of Oshawa) also contributing to the program.

  • Registration: There are no registration fees to join the program
  • Uniforms: Uniforms are provided free of charge while a cadet is actively enrolled
  • Training: Training is provided free of charge
  • Summer Training: There are no charges for those selected to attend summer training
  • Fundraising: While there is no cost for the program, cadets and their parents/guardians are encouraged to participate in local fundraising activities
  • Optional activities: There may be a nominal (and typically subsidized) cost to some optional activities (i.e. dances, dinners, power familiarization flights, year end trips/activities)

Who does the instruction and supervision?

Most of the instruction is performed by senior cadets under the supervision of adult officers and civilian instructors or by the officers and instructors themselves.

What other activities do cadets do?

Air Cadets participate in a wide range of activities focused on aviation, sports, fitness, citizenship, and leadership, including gliding, survival skills, public speaking, drill, marksmanship, biathlon, and music. Cadets also engage in field training exercises, community service parades for veterans, and attend specialized summer training courses, fostering teamwork and discipline.

What do cadets do during the summer?

During the summer, Air Cadets can attend free multi-week training courses at Cadet Training Centres (CTCs) across Canada, with focuses such as music, fitness, marksmanship, drill, survival, and aviation. Cadets may also apply for Transport Canada Glider or Private Pilot’s License courses or serve as staff cadets. These programs offer valuable training, travel opportunities, and skill development.

Do cadets get paid?

During the training year (September through June), cadets are not paid for local corps or squadron training, as this is considered volunteer training.

During Summer Training, cadets may receive up to $60/week as a training allowance. Cadets who apply and are selected as staff cadets (16-18 years old) may be employed by a Cadet Training Centre and receive a daily wage.

Do I have to join the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) after cadets?

Cadets are under no obligation to join the CAF after participating in the program. While the program uses military-like structures and introduces cadets to CAF activities, it’s a civilian youth program funded by the Department of National Defence in partnership with the Air Cadet League of Canada. Cadets develop leadership, citizenship, and life skills, and the program is designed to provide a positive, lifelong impact, whether or not they pursue a military career.
