Last Monday evening was devoted entirely to taking photos of the Squadron and all the different Squadron teams and groups.

A Former Cadet Returns

The Squadron had a surprise visit by one of the units former Warrant Officers.  Lt. David Pitre talked briefly to the Squadron about his experiences as a cadet and how it has helped him in his career with the Canadian Forces. He has just graduated from the Hawk II flight training program and he is now off to start training on helicopters.

Power Flying Scholarships

This week the first confirmation of cadet summer camp selections were announced. Pictured below are three of the squadron’s 

cadets who have been selected by the Air Cadet League to receive a Power Flying Scholarship.

A Cadet Graduation, Tops in Lottery Ticket Sales and Air Cadet Service Medal

The big day and unfortunately the last day as an air cadet. It is always a difficult moment for a cadet to wear his uniform one last time. Sergeant Dylan Williams is graduating the program and

we all wish him well and hope that his experiences as a cadet will be of value and an inspiration to him as he moves on to the next important challenges in his life.

This year our squadron had a very successful year with the Ontario Provincial Committee of the Air Cadet League of Canada annual lottery.

Warrant Officer Sheppard won the award for selling the most tickets this year with nine books sold.

Three more cadets were presented their Air Cadet Service Medal on Monday night.  This is presented to a cadet after four years of good service.  Congratulations!

Thoughts From the Treadmill

Like many, I have been hit by the flu bug that is going around.  Unfortunately, there hasn’t been too much treadmill time for me the last few days.  I have sat down several times to try to do up my thoughts and just haven’t been able to wrap my head around the task, here goes again.

After the great weekend we had with the dinner last week, we rolled into our annual photo night.  I get a kick out of the comments of both the cadets and staff while we are waiting for the numerous flashes that fill the night.  The “old timer” cadets have friendly wagers as to how many photos will actually be taken of the main group (I think I heard the final number was 38 this year).  I hope they all realize that now is when the real work begins on the process.  Even with the professional photographer and the fancy flashes and lights, there still is a fair amount of fine tuning to do with the photo.  I am sure the end result will once again be a great memory for all members of the Squadron to cherish for years to come. 

This coming weekend the marksmanship team will be heading to Trenton to compete in the provincial championship.  I can’t express enough how proud I am of all of them as well as all of those cadets who tried out for the team and continue to practice to improve their skill at this very difficult skill.  We don’t hear too much from these cadets all year, but when the results come in they sure are heard.  Thanks to 2Lt. Stacey, Mr. Ogilvie and Captain Chandler for their hard work in getting the team this far.            GOOD LUCK this weekend!

We will also have a pretty large group of senior cadets heading out to Ganaraska this weekend to do some leadership exercises as well as various team building events and some good fun with their friends.  I am quite surprised and must say disappointed with the poor numbers that have signed up for this activity.  Captain Weigel and his team of staff and Warrant Officers put a lot of work into the weekend and although there is some hard work involved on the part of the participants, there is also a lot of fun to be had.  I highly encourage anyone who has not signed up to give it a shot; I really think you will get a lot out of the weekend.

Hopefully Sunday will be as nice as the weather man thinks it is going to be for all the cadets going gliding.  For many, this will be the first time to experience the thrill of flight.  I hope that if the spark isn’t already there, that this ignites a lifelong passion with flying and all of the things related to it.  Have Fun!
