Recruit Graduation
This Monday will be the Recruit Graduation Parade. Parents and guests are invited to attend ..
The parade will start at 9:00 PM in the gym. Parents and Guests should plan to be there by 8:45 PM.

Tri-Service Dance
Tickets for the Tri-Service Dance scheduled for Friday December 7th, will be on sale this Monday.
Do not forget to pick up your ticket for the social event of the cadet year.

Power Flying Oshawa Airport

Although the weather has not been very cooperative we have managed through our powered flying program to get over 30 cadets up in a powered aircraft so far this year. For those who may not be aware we currently have five pilots who are authorized by the Canadian Forces to fly our cadets. Two of our pilots are private owners who volunteer their aircraft and their time to the flying of our cadets. The other three pilots are members of the Canadian Flight Academy here in Oshawa and two of these pilots are highly qualified flight instructors. We normally use Cessna 172 Aircraft and a Piper Cherokee as well as a Piper Comanche aircraft for our flying operations. Our flights usually last about 45 minutes and depending on the weather and traffic cadets on occasion get a chance to fly around the CN tower in Toronto. As you can see in the photos we also when the weather clears a chance to fly at night. We only do this on Monday evenings so that cadets get a chance to fly during our Monday evening training parades.

One of our private owners is a female pilot and the second private pilot is actually an Air Canada Captain. Three of our pilots are ex cadets from this squadron while another is a retired cadet officer as well as a class one instructor. We are fortunate with such an experienced group of pilots and modern aircraft to be able to offer our cadets a unique flying experience.

Achievement Points On the Web

The Achievement Point Program results has now been added to the Chadburn website. We will be updating this once every two weeks until the end of the training year. It is every cadets responsibility to ensure that they are getting credited for activities they have attended. If you see a discrepancy please see Mr. Biffin or send a e-mail to 151racsc@gmail.com.

2013 Summer Training
.
The Summer Training Program includes terrific opportunities for cadets who are active participants in the squadron. There are many courses to choose from, any of which will provide invaluable experiences.

In 2012, this program was a great success, allowing 73 cadets the opportunity to attend Summer Training, this represents 57% of the 130 cadets that applied. Many of the cadets achieved Highest Honours available from Top Cadet in General Training to Top Cadet in their flight or team.
.
Applications are now open for the 2013 Summer Training Program. These applications must be back to Mr. Biffin by December 17, 2012. To receive an application, please see Mr. Biffin on Monday Night parade or go to the website and download a copy. Look for Summer Training and the 2013 Summer Training Application Package.

An update from former Chadburn cadet WO2 Nick Bell (Now OS Bell)

Just like OCdt Keoghan said, Chadburn squadron has been a big influence and definitely helped me get my foot in the door at the beginning of my career in the Canadian Forces. It’s hard to believe that I will have 2 years in the Royal Canadian Navy on December 14th of this year. It seems like just yesterday that I was being sworn into the Canadian Forces and since joining, I have been able to do so much. Long story short, after my basic training in April 2011, I was posted to CFB Esquimalt, BC where I spent a total of 9 months. While out there, I was posted to HMCS Oriole and spent the summer of 2011 sailing around the Pacific Ocean. Afterwards, I completed my QL3 course for Marine Engineering and was posted out here to Halifax, NS where I am a crew member of HMCS Toronto. I have been here in Halifax for almost a year now and its now starting to feel like home. Its constant training in my job so I am always busy trying to get the next qualification or certification and working on a warship is definitely an eye opening experience. There is a lot to learn and remember but the payoff is worth it. Once I have my QL4 package completed, I will be eligible for promotion to Able Seaman. I should have that done by February 1st, 2013. My ship just got back from completing Work Ups which is about a month long sail intended to prepare us for deployment. To add to that, as of January 6th, 2013 I will be getting deployed for a period of 6-8 months somewhere near Iran (or so it looks). It’s going to be long but I am looking forward to it none the less. I am currently on the Naval Boarding Party Basic Training Course. This is a six week course and at the end of it, I will be a qualified member of the ship’s Naval Boarding Party team. I thought I’d send this now and say that I am still grateful for my time as a cadet in Chadburn squadron and that I look forward to advancing in my career as a Marine Engineer.

Thoughts from the Treadmill
.
As I spent a lot of the week running back and forth from Toronto and the cadet hall, not many thoughts from the treadmill this week. I am excited to see one of our new newsletter features this week. Where are they now will run as often as we have input from former cadets who have moved on to bigger and better things. This will not always be military, but as these are some of the folks that stay in touch the most, chances are we will see them more often.
.
On the same kind of thought, we will shortly be placing a display board on the east wall of the parade square at the hall. This board will showcase those Squadron members who have gone on to serve in the military. We will hopefully have updates from the members as to promotions and postings in case our current cadets choose to write them a letter. If you are aware of any Squadron alumni who went on to the military, please have them contact me so we can arrange to get a 5×7 photo of them in their military uniform as well as some information about their cadet career. I am hoping to have the board full of photos and a brief bio of each member.

It was great to see so many members of the Squadron band and Escort out at the Oshawa Santa Claus Parade last night. The placement of the Squadron right in front of the Big Man himself meant for a long wait before the cadets stepped off, but it also meant that the exposure the Squadron got was fantastic.
.
Tomorrow night is the recruit graduation, I am looking forward to welcoming the new recruits to the official ranks of the Squadron. Please remember how it was when you were brand new and didn’t always know where to go or who to speak to about something. Share your experiences with them, mentor them and most importantly, be a friendly face to them.
.
This also means that we will be having another recruit course starting on Monday December 3rd, make sure you tell your friends.
.
We also have our visitors coming from Detachment tomorrow night, please make sure to have your uniform up to standards as well as a goods haircut for the male cadets. If they speak to you don’t shout so they go deaf, but make sure to speak clearly and loudly enough for them to hear.
.

We suspect that not many of those who follow our email know that just across from Ottawa in Gatineau Airport there is a small but remarkable collection of war birds and trainers that are in flying condition. Some of the war birds and trainers that you see above can be found at this facility. We included the second photo as it shows one of our former cadet warrant officers from many years ago Dr. Richard Gimblett just after he completed his trip in the Wings Cornell Trainer. As he puts it:

Finally got up for my flip in the Vintage Wings Cornell yesterday, for a pair of Remembrance Day flypasts, over Stittsville Legion and Almonte Town Hall.
