YEAR END TRIP SIGN-UP

For the next two Monday nights (April 20th and 27th), Year-end Trip sign-ups will occur at Rotary Hall from 1900 until 2100.  Please park at Village Union Public School and NOT in the driveway at Rotary Hall.

Please have with you emergency contact info for the long weekend in May, and pertinent medical information (including prescription medications) for your cadet.

The cost of the trip is $200 (minus 10% of fall tagging and 10% spring tagging, if applicable).  Amounts owing will be available at the hall on sign up nights.  Payment can be made by cash or cheque made payable to “151 Chadburn Squadron”.

We have space for approximately 85 cadets on the year end trip, if we have more cadets than that sign up, selection will be based upon achievement points.  If your cadet is not selected after sign ups are done, you will be reimbursed the amount paid.

Squadron t-shirts will be available for sale during sign up nights for $15 and are mandatory for wear on at least one day of the trip.  (If your cadet already has a t-shirt, they do not need to purchase another one).

Power Familiarization Flying Sign Up

The Squadron recently got approved to restart their Power Familiarization flying program from the Oshawa Airport.
This coming Monday April 20, signup sheets will again be available for those cadets that missed sign up last week.

Flights are $10 per 45 minute flight. We will be scheduling our first flights shortly and you will be contacted by the NCO in charge.

Orienteering, Ganaraska Forest Centre

One of the Squadron’s more popular activities is orienteering in the Ganaraska Forest.

Cadets first have a classroom training session and then its off to the forest to find the various targets that the staff have set up.

It sounds simple enough but some cadets certainly had their problems when it comes to recognizing the terain features on map and then using a compass to locate the targets.

As one can see it was not all orienteering as the cadets also got a chance to take on the staff in a game of baseball.

Financial Planning Presentation

“Winning The Money Game” with Mr. Jerry Smith

Each year we have a financial advisor come in and speak to our cadets about managing one’s finances.

An important topic when you consider that not too far down the road many of our cadets will be getting ready for a job or an institute of higher learning.

Thoughts From the Treadmill

Another great weekend as far as the weather goes.  I can’t remember the last tag days where we had such nice weather for the entire weekend.  I would like to thank all of the cadets who participated in the fund-raising, as well as their parents for getting them to the locations.   I would also like to thank all of the staff who made the weekend a success.

It is hard to believe that the Annual Inspection is now less than a month away.  I would like to invite all of the parents and friends of the Squadron out to see this great group of young people in action on May 12th. They have worked so hard all year to get to this level of proficiency , I am proud of them and I know anyone who sees the annual will also have a sense of pride in the entire group.

Good Luck to both the Drill Team and the Band who will be travelling to Kingston next Saturday to compete in the Easter Ontario Area Band and Drill Competition.

As I write this on Sunday night, word is out that the secondary school teachers will be going on strike tomorrow.  As it stands now, we will still be parading at Central Collegiate tomorrow night.  If this changes, we will update the Squadron web page as well as the Facebook page.  Each cadet will also receive a phone call.  The plan is that we will parade at Rotary Hall if we can’t use the school.

That’s all for now.

Stay safe and have a great week.

Restored B-29 Emerges on 70th Anniversary of its First Delivery

clip_image008

It looks like Fifi, the only known B-29 to maintain airworthy status, but it will soon have some welcome company. After several decades, the efforts to bring the B-29 bomber named Doc from its dormancy in the Mojave Desert to back into the skies has taken one giant step in the right direction. While the initial restoration efforts moved at a snail’s pace due to a lack of funding and adequate workspace, the airplane, which moved to Wichita, Kansas, in 2000, has been enthusiastically worked on for the past two years by volunteers. The group has estimated that it will cost between $7 million and $9 million to finish Doc’s restoration.
